We all realized that as physicians we are professionals whose responsibilities do not conform to a 9-5 schedule; patient care issues demand sacrifices that we accepted to make. However, it is never fair when work takes more time away from the family than it needs to. In the employed model, the inflexibility of patient hours, coupled with the administrative burdens imposed, mean less time for special events, sports games, or just quality family&nbnsp;time.
The predicament is not much better in the independent practice. The demands of the practice, usually the administrative aspects, end up taking more time than they should; time needed to deal with HR matters, billing, office expenses, insurance concerns, technology, can all feel like it keeps piling on. Furthermore, the necessity to meet the office overhead and yet draw a salary pushes many doctors to increase their patient care hours in hopes of higher earnings.
